On April 2, Marshall Public Schools will encourage residents to vote on a capital referendum for the purpose of improving the safety of our school entrances, windows and roof replacement at Marshall Elementary School, and ADA accessible restrooms and updated concessions building at outdoor facilities.
The Need For Operational Funds
Current budget does not allow the district to make these large needed facility improvements or replacements. A successful capital referendum will improve the safety at each of our school entrances by creating an alternative entrance to be used during the student day, build an ADA accessible restrooms/concessions building at the football/track complex, and replace the 2004 original Elementary School windows and roof. .
State funding for public schools has limited the Marshall Public School’s ability to operate and maintain our schools without local taxpayer referendum support. Referendum dollars are needed to replace limited State aid and revenue limits. Due to continued limits in educational funding, Marshall continues to make budget cuts even with the community’s support of operational referendums.
The District received a $325 per pupil increase in State aid this year. The increase didn’t fully cover staff salary increases which are essential in retaining talented staff.
The last Capital referendum was approved in February 2002 when electors overwhelmingly voted in favor to construct the Elementary School with necessary furnishings to support instruction
